NAS Data Recovery (Synology, QNAP)

NAS offline, degraded volumes, ransomware? We bring your data back — Synology, QNAP, Drobo — without reformatting or overwriting anything.

NAS data recovery at Belgium Data Recovery is done in our Brussels laboratory. Offline NAS, degraded volume, deleted pool or ransomware attack: we clone each disk read-only and reassemble the NAS software stack (mdadm RAID + LVM + Btrfs, ext4 or ZFS) outside the original box — without reformatting or overwriting anything. Synology, QNAP, WD My Cloud, Buffalo, Asustor, TerraMaster and Drobo. In the majority of cases, the data is recovered. Free diagnosis, from €490 excl. VAT per disk, payment only if successful (No Cure, No Pay). Belgium Data Recovery successfully recovers data for more than 450 clients every year, all media combined — several thousand since 2012.

NAS Data Recovery (Synology, QNAP)

An offline NAS can halt an entire business. We bring your volumes back on Synology, QNAP, Western Digital My Cloud, Buffalo, Asustor, TerraMaster and Drobo — Btrfs, ext4 and ZFS file systems, degraded RAID or ransomware — without reformatting or overwriting a single disk.

Brands & models we handle

  • Synology
  • QNAP
  • WD My Cloud
  • Buffalo TeraStation
  • Asustor
  • TerraMaster
  • Drobo

Do you recognise these signs?

  • NAS offline, degraded or failed volumes
  • Multiple NAS drives failed simultaneously
  • Firmware update corrupted the file system
  • Network share inaccessible — data locked on the server
  • Accidental volume deletion or factory reset
  • Ransomware attack — files encrypted on the NAS
Power off the device now Further use can worsen the damage. Call us immediately.

What you should never do with a failed device

  • Don't reset the NAS or recreate the storage pool: the volume configuration holds the keys to reassembling your data.
  • Don't use the built-in "volume repair" (Synology, QNAP) on a degraded volume: it can write to the array and reduce recovery chances.
  • Don't update DSM / QTS / the firmware hoping to "fix" it: an update can change the volume structure.
  • On ransomware, disconnect the NAS from the network, don't delete the encrypted files (the originals are sometimes recoverable) and don't pay the ransom before assessing what is still recoverable.
  • Don't replace a failed disk to let the NAS "repair" itself: the resync writes to the remaining disks.
  • Note the position of each disk before removing it and don't mix up the bay order.

What the laboratory actually does

Imaging of each disk

Each disk in the NAS is cloned read-only. A mechanically failed disk is first repaired in the ISO 5 clean room. All recovery work is then done on these copies, to limit handling of your original disks.

Reassembly outside the box

We rebuild the RAID (mdadm), volume (LVM) and file-system layers on our station, outside the original NAS — essential when the box itself is dead or the volume no longer mounts.

Synology SHR & QNAP

Support for Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR/SHR-2) and its nested mdadm structure, as well as QNAP volumes (thick, thin, static) and their proprietary metadata.

Btrfs, ext4 & ZFS

Repair and extraction on NAS file systems: ext4, Btrfs (with its snapshots) and ZFS. We also recover data from snapshots and deleted volumes where possible.

Ransomware & deletion

After a ransomware attack we recover original files still present, unencrypted snapshots and previous versions. We do not "break" strong encryption: we work on what remains recoverable, transparently.

Verification before payment

We verify and open your files in the laboratory before any invoice. You only pay once the recovery is confirmed — No Cure, No Pay.

Frequently asked questions

My Synology can no longer mount the volume — is it recoverable?

Yes, most of the time. A Synology volume that no longer mounts is usually caused by a degraded RAID, a damaged Btrfs/ext4 file system or a failing disk — rarely by actual data loss. We clone the disks, reassemble the SHR RAID and the volume outside the NAS, then repair the file system on a copy. Power off the NAS and send us the disks for a free diagnosis.

My NAS was hit by ransomware — can you recover my files?

Sometimes, depending on the situation. We don't decrypt strong encryption, but many NAS keep snapshots, previous versions or original files not yet overwritten, from which recovery is possible. Disconnect the NAS from the network, delete nothing, and bring it in for a free diagnosis that will establish what is recoverable.

Do I send the whole NAS or just the disks?

Most often the disks are enough — remember to note their order and position. For some proprietary configurations (encrypted QNAP, models with hardware-tied keys, Drobo), include the box too: it may hold information needed for reassembly.

How much does NAS data recovery cost?

From €490 excl. VAT per disk, because each disk has to be cloned and analysed individually before the volume is reassembled. The diagnosis is free and the quote firm: you only pay if the recovery succeeds (No Cure, No Pay), with no rush surcharge. VAT extra.

How long does NAS recovery take?

The diagnosis is completed within 24 to 48 h of receiving the disks. Recovery then takes 5 to 15 business days depending on the number of disks, the RAID level and the file system. Business-critical cases are handled as a priority, at no extra charge.
