Hard Drive Data Recovery
Clicking, drive not recognized, a drop? When the failure is mechanical, we open the drive in an ISO 5 clean room — where recovery software can do nothing.
Hard drive data recovery at Belgium Data Recovery is done in our Brussels laboratory, in an ISO 5 clean room. Clicking, drive not detected, scratched platters or a failed read head: opening, head swap and firmware rebuild are carried out on site, in Belgium — your drive never leaves the country. In the majority of cases, the data is recovered. Free diagnosis, from €270 excl. VAT, payment only if successful (No Cure, No Pay).
When a hard drive fails, it's almost always mechanical: read head, platters, motor. We recover data from every manufacturer — Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, HGST, Samsung — in 2.5" and 3.5", SATA or SAS, up to 22 TB helium models. Every drive is opened in an ISO 5 clean room.

Do you recognise these signs?
- Clicking, scraping or knocking sounds from the drive
- Drive not recognized by computer or BIOS
- Files or folders disappeared after drop or shock
- Operating system no longer boots
- "Drive not formatted" or "damaged structure" message
- Bad sectors detected — very slow or impossible file access
What you should never do with a failed device
- Keep using a drive that clicks or beeps — switch it off immediately: with every rotation the heads damage the platters a little more.
- Put a wet drive in rice or the freezer — corrosion continues and condensation short-circuits the electronics.
- Run Recuva, TestDisk or EaseUS on a physical failure — the software forces millions of reads that worsen the damage.
- Move an external drive into another enclosure — hardware encryption and an integrated USB bridge: it won't work and may block access.
- Change the PCB yourself — the ROM is unique to each drive; an “identical” board is not compatible.
- Open the drive outside a clean room — a single dust particle permanently scratches a platter.
What the laboratory actually does
Secure imaging first
We work as much as possible from an image (copy) of the drive rather than the original, to limit handling. Imaging and head-by-head reading are done with Data Extractor (PC-3000), with mapping of weak sectors and priority to critical files.
Head stack replacement
Failing read heads replaced in an ISO 5 clean room with a compatible donor — donor stock on site and sourcing by family and firmware.
Firmware & Service Area
Repair of the service area, translator and modules with PC-3000 (Portable Pro / UDMA) — for drives that are “not detected” or report a wrong capacity.
PCB & ROM transfer
Electronic board repaired or replaced with transfer of the original ROM, unique to each drive — an “identical” board alone is not enough.
Platter transfer
In extreme cases (scratches, seizure), transfer of the platters into a healthy chassis: a rare operation that few labs perform, carried out here regularly.
Complex media
SMR drives, helium models and external USB drives with hardware encryption (SED): WD/Marvell utilities and management of the drive’s own keys.
The engineer behind every recovery
At Belgium Data Recovery, no middlemen, no call centre: your device is opened and handled personally by Takhir Saidov, the engineer who runs the lab. You deal directly with him, from diagnosis to return — no juniors, no script.

Frequently asked questions
My hard drive is making a clicking noise — what should I do?
Switch it off immediately and don't plug it back in. Clicking almost always points to a failing read head that can scratch the platters with every attempt: the longer the drive spins, the higher the risk of permanent data loss. Bring it in for a free diagnosis — opening and head replacement are done in an ISO 5 clean room.
Can data be recovered from a dropped hard drive or one that took a knock?
Yes, in most cases. A fall often shifts or breaks the head stack, sometimes causing head-platter contact. We open the drive in a clean room, replace the heads with a compatible donor and extract the data. The success rate depends on the condition of the platters; the free diagnosis confirms it before any intervention.
How much does hard drive data recovery cost?
From €270 excl. VAT for a logical or electronic failure, more for a mechanical intervention in the clean room (head swap, platters). The diagnosis is free and the quote is firm: you only pay if the recovery succeeds (No Cure, No Pay), with no rush surcharge. VAT extra.
How long does recovery take?
The diagnosis is completed within 24 h of receipt. A standard recovery then takes 3 to 15 business days, depending on the failure and the availability of a compatible donor drive. Urgent cases are handled as a priority, at no extra charge.
My external USB hard drive is no longer recognized — what should I do?
A modern external USB drive is no longer a simple SATA disk in an enclosure: the USB connector is soldered to the board (sometimes with no SATA port at all, as on WD My Passport drives), and the data is often hardware-encrypted, with a key tied to that specific board. Swapping the enclosure or the board therefore yields nothing readable — the original board must be repaired (re-soldering the USB connector, a SATA adapter, or access to the service area) while keeping the chip that holds the keys, using PC-3000 equipment and the WD/Marvell utility. The number-one failure is a torn-off USB connector: don't keep plugging the drive back in, switch it off and bring it in for a free diagnosis. Learn more about unrecognized external drives →
