The moves that save your data — and the mistakes that destroy it

Most permanent losses happen after the failure, from one wrong move. Before handing us your media:

Power the media off and do not reconnect it

Each read attempt on a failing mechanical drive can worsen the damage irreversibly.

Do not run recovery software on a physical failure

Recuva, TestDisk, EaseUS, Disk Drill are built for simple logical failures. On a physical failure they force the media and can make data unrecoverable.

No rice for a water-damaged phone

Rice does not absorb the water inside the components: corrosion continues. Power the phone off and do not charge it.

Never the freezer for a drive

Condensation on thawing short-circuits the electronics and corrodes the platters. It is a dangerous myth.

Do not swap the board (PCB) yourself

Firmware is unique to each hard drive: an 'identical' PCB is not compatible and complicates recovery.

On a RAID/NAS, do not rebuild or reassemble

Power the server off, note the drive order and touch nothing. A rebuild can overwrite the other members’ data.

The golden rule: the less you intervene, the better your odds. When in doubt, unplug and hand the media to a lab.

Why a price range and not an exact amount?

Because the price depends on the real state of the media, known only after the diagnosis. The range gives you a frame; the firm price is set after analysis and validated by you before we start.

Can the price go up after the diagnosis?

Not without your agreement. The firm price is given after the free diagnosis and only charged after your validation. Nothing is committed without your go-ahead.

What if my data is not recovered?

No data recovered, no recovery charge. That is the No Cure, No Pay principle.

Does urgency cost more?

LaCie d2 Professional 8 TB Not Recognized After a Fall

Failure : An 8 TB LaCie d2 Professional external enclosure with a USB-C connection was no longer recognized by the computer after being dropped, and a slight abnormal noise was coming from the drive. The LaCie d2 Professional houses an 8 TB Seagate IronWolf Pro ST8000NT001 hard drive, which no longer allowed access to its data via the USB port. The customer had dropped the device. No backup was available.

Work done : The diagnosis required removing the Seagate hard drive from its LaCie enclosure. On the printed circuit board (PCB), the ROM memory was spread across two separate chips: these were read using a programmer, then imported into the PC-3000 system and reconstructed into a single ROM image. Using the PC-3000 Portable Pro, the drive was then configured for head-by-head reading, with each read head processed separately to preserve data integrity.

Result : 99.9% of the data was successfully recovered within three days. The files were verified before being returned to the client.

Maxtor M3 Portable 1 TB: Data Unaccessible

1TB · 2026 · Luxembourg

Failure : A 1 TB Maxtor M3 Portable external hard drive (Seagate ST1000LM035-1RK172) had inaccessible data, even though the enclosure appeared to be in perfect condition. The customer, based in Luxembourg, could hear the drive running but was no longer able to open his files. Another lab had already attempted data recovery, without success. The data at stake was limited but precious: family photos that existed only on this drive, with no backup.

Work done : The diagnosis ruled out a simple logic issue and revealed a weak read head as well as a locked ROM module, which was preventing the disk from functioning. The ROM was first unlocked on a PC-3000 workstation to restore access. A head map was then created in Data Extractor, followed by a map of the data sectors that were actually occupied. Only the data useful to the customer—the family photos—were imaged in read-only mode, taking care to protect the fragile read head to maximize readability.

Result : 99% of the requested data was recovered, including all of the family photos in question. The files were sent back to Luxembourg by mail.

Failed RAID 1 on HP ML350

SAS 500 · 2026 · Dilbeek

Failure : An HP ProLiant ML350 G6 server with a RAID 1 of two SAS drives became inaccessible after a reboot. The first drive had failed weeks earlier without any alert, and the second eventually gave out, blocking access to a transport company's critical data.

Work done : We performed a sector-by-sector copy of each drive to preserve the originals. By comparing the images, we identified the most up-to-date drive and then extracted all the data.

Result : All data was recovered and returned within 24 hours.
