A repetitive metallic clicking sound coming from your computer is one of the most distressing noises you can hear. This sound — often referred to as the "click of death" — almost always signals a severe mechanical failure of the hard drive. Every second counts.
Why does a hard drive click?
The clicking noise comes from the read/write heads that can no longer locate the magnetic tracks. The drive attempts to read, fails, recalibrates the heads, and tries again — resulting in a rhythmic sound. Possible causes include:
- Damaged or misaligned read/write heads.
- Scratched or degraded magnetic platter surface.
- Faulty electronic board (PCB).
- Failed spindle motor.
- Recent drop or mechanical shock.
What you must NEVER do
The following mistakes can turn a recoverable issue into permanent data loss:
- Continue using the drive. Every extra spin worsens mechanical damage. If the heads scratch the platters, the data becomes permanently unrecoverable.
- Run recovery software (Recuva, TestDisk, etc.). These tools stress the drive intensively and accelerate its mechanical destruction.
- Open the drive at home. Magnetic platters are ultra-sensitive to dust. A single 1-micron particle is enough to permanently scratch the surface.
- Freezing the drive. This 90s method is a myth: it causes condensation and exacerbates damage in almost every case.
- Hitting or shaking the drive. Even gently, this can permanently misalign or damage the read/write heads.
The correct 3-step procedure
- Turn off the computer immediately and do not turn it back on. If the drive is inside a laptop, unplug the power supply and remove the battery (if it is removable).
- Do not reconnect the drive to another computer to "check" its status.
- Contact a specialist as soon as possible for a secure evaluation.
Can the data still be recovered?
In the vast majority of cases, yes — provided you act quickly and do not worsen the damage. The success rate directly depends on the condition of the magnetic platters when the drive reaches us.
At Belgium Data Recovery, we work in an ISO Class 5 cleanroom to replace defective heads with compatible donor parts, clone the drive sector by sector, and extract your data. The complete process typically takes 3 to 7 business days, and an emergency 24-hour recovery is available if necessary.
Our policy: Free diagnostics, transparent quote before any intervention, and No Cure, No Pay (you only pay if your data is successfully recovered).
How much does it cost?
Data recovery for a clicking hard drive starts at 270 € excl. VAT, depending on the severity of the damage. Diagnostics are always free and without obligation. We will communicate the exact amount to you before starting any intervention.
