- [Apple refuses to back up your data before a repair](https://www.belgiumdatarecovery.eu/sauvegarde-donnees-avant-reparation-apple/): what to do when the Apple Store tells you to back up your MacBook yourself before a repair. Apple's repair terms put backup on the customer, and with a broken screen the machine cannot be driven at the counter. Critical point: on T2 (2018–2020) and Apple Silicon Macs (M1–M4) the SSD is soldered to the logic board and encrypted by that board's Secure Enclave — if the repair replaces the logic board or swaps the whole unit, the internal data becomes mathematically inaccessible and no laboratory in the world can recover it. While the Mac still boots, the backup is a clean job: external display over USB-C, boot with the user's login password, copy to an external drive, verified with the customer before the Mac goes back to Apple. From €250 excl. VAT, often same-day, in the Brussels lab, ~20 minutes from the Apple Store Toison d'Or (Ixelles). Bring the macOS login password (mandatory — without it the Mac will not decrypt its own disk), the USB-C charger and an external drive. If the Mac no longer boots (dropped, water-damaged), it becomes data recovery instead: €700–850, or €900–1400 when the logic board itself must be repaired.
